GIAVA
THE GIAVA FOUNDER’S STORY

What went into making one plain black T-shirt.

A pile of samples. One clear goal: a shirt I actually enjoyed wearing.

Material samples considered for GIAVA’s Lyocell T-shirt

1. The problem I was trying to solve

The reason this T-shirt exists is material. I wanted a gym shirt that looked great at the start of a session and still felt right halfway through, not one that suddenly turned clingy and plasticky once heat and movement kicked in.

That pattern kept repeating in what I wore: a shirt could look sharp in a mirror, then feel synthetic and restrictive as soon as I was actually training. I wanted something that held shape through the shoulders, chest, and arms, while still leaving room at the stomach so it moved naturally.

That became the brief from day one: one plain black T-shirt that felt comfortable through real movement, not just in static photos.

2. Why obvious alternatives still felt off

I started where most people start: by looking at all the common material options and trying them with an open mind. Cotton can feel great at first touch, and there are cotton tees I still like for specific situations, but for my use it often became damp and heavy. On warm days, or after moving around a lot, I noticed the shirt held onto moisture in a way that made me want to change out of it sooner than expected.

Polyester and recycled polyester were next. They have clear performance advantages in some sportswear contexts, but for this project they kept giving me that synthetic feel I wanted to avoid. The same issue came up with many nylon or acrylic blends: technically useful in some garments, just not the feel I wanted for an everyday black tee with a cleaner, more natural hand.

I also looked at bamboo options and quickly learned that many are actually forms of viscose in practice, which made me dig deeper into process rather than marketing labels. Linen and hemp can be excellent fibers too, but they create a different texture profile than what I was aiming for in this specific product. Merino wool was a genuine second choice — it can be soft, handles odour well, and performs impressively — but in the end I wanted something lighter and smoother for this exact silhouette and use case.

3. The material decision: 100% lyocell

The balance I was searching for eventually pointed me to lyocell. What mattered to me was not a buzzword, but a process and an outcome. Lyocell is made from wood pulp and is directly dissolved using NMMO, and in that system the solvent can be recovered and reused in a closed-loop process. That process distinction is part of why lyocell stood out when I compared it side by side with other regenerated cellulosic routes.

I also want to be transparent about nuance, because this topic is often flattened into slogans. Viscose and modal commonly involve carbon disulfide in their manufacturing pathways, and that fact is relevant when you evaluate process differences. At the same time, discussing production chemicals does not automatically mean that a finished garment is harmful to wear. Those are related but separate questions, and I think people deserve honesty instead of oversimplified claims.

So I avoided both extremes: no greenwashing language, and no fear-based language. It is not a chemical-free material story. The decision for this shirt was straightforward — 100% lyocell, no polyester, no elastane — because that gave me the smooth handfeel, lightweight drape, and comfort profile I had been chasing.

4. The fit I kept refining

Fabric solved only half the problem. The other half was fit. I wanted the shoulder line to sit cleanly, the chest to feel close but not restrictive, and the arms to follow shape in a flattering way without squeezing.

At the same time, I needed room at the stomach so the shirt moved with me naturally instead of gripping every contour. That balance is easy to describe and hard to execute. Too little ease and it looks like activewear compression. Too much ease and the shirt loses structure and intention. Oversized was never the point — I wanted a precise everyday fit that reads simple, not sloppy.

The result is a fit that stays close through shoulders, chest, and arms, with measured room through the midsection. It is the kind of fit that does not ask for attention yet makes you feel put together when you catch your reflection.

5. Built for a real day, not a product page

The final test was always practical: can I wear this from gym to coffee to trousers later in the day without feeling like I need to change for each setting? That was the original brief, and it stayed the brief until the end. I wanted one black tee that could move across contexts without compromise.

What I like now is that it feels calm and dependable. It does not announce itself with gimmicks, and it does not rely on exaggerated claims. It just feels soft, lightweight, and easy to wear in motion. The fit holds where I want shape and relaxes where I want comfort, so I spend less time adjusting the shirt and more time forgetting about it — which, to me, is exactly what good basics should do.

If your experience with black tees has been similar to mine, this is for you. One plain black T-shirt, built with intention.

“Phenomenal — probably the best material I’ve worn in a T-shirt.”

Leo Oritz

“I love the shirt. The material feels fresh, and the fit is really nice — especially on the arms and shoulders.”
